Hazel Tindall

Join renowned Shetland knitter Hazel Tindall to learn the art of Fair Isle knitting.

In the workshop, students will use this traditional skill to produce a Fair Isle bookmark and should go home with a finished/almost finished piece. The bookmark is knitted in the round and then cut to make a flat piece of work so knitters have the opportunity to overcome the fear of cutting their knitting, and learn how to finish a cut piece.

Hazel Tindall was privileged to grow up in Shetland where she was surrounded by knitters who needed to knit quickly and to a high standard in order to gain an income.  She has been knitting for longer than she has been reading and writing and has no memory of learning to knit.

It’s nearly 60 years since she knitted her first cardigan for herself and well over 50 since she knitted her first Fair Isle cardigan. Since then she has knitted hundreds, if not thousands, of pieces of knitting. Her love of Fair Isle and the many patterns and colours to choose from mean she will never run out of ideas!
